Nybron in Härnösand, Sweden

After launching the project, Härnösand Municipality has consulted Gottlieb Paludan Architects regarding the replacement of Nybron for further help with architectural form and design.

In April 2023, Gottlieb Paludan Architects was contacted by Härnösand Municipality regarding the replacement of the old Nybron bridge from 1937. The project is an important step in the future development of Härnösand's city centre, as the bridge, with its central location in the city, connects the mainland with Härnön. The concept is furthermore part of a larger initiative to create a modern and attractive stretch along the waterfront from Bryggaren to Sälsten. The ambition is to optimise the bridge's structural basis in accordance with the town's history, while meeting current and future needs.

The new swing bridge will have a rotating centre on which an arch will be placed. This preserves the line of sight over the water, while the position of the arch between the road and the pedestrian and cycle path creates a clear demarcation and increases safety for vulnerable road users.

The bridge design is based on a desire to unite the city and is therefore designed with all citizens in mind - motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike. Seating areas are integrated along the bridge, inviting people to rest or take in the view. The aesthetic design in the cityscape is linked to the original bridge from the 1800s, from which three arches in the same style emerged.
