Nykøbing Sjælland Station's forecourt

In collaboration with Lokaltog and Movia, Gottlieb Paludan Architects has improved the traffic flow at the station forecourt in Nykøbing Sjælland.

The focal point of the project is to create an improved station forecourt that creates a connection between modes of transport and supports the need for a reorganisation of the bus terminal. With a clear division of buses, cars and pedestrians, more safety is created for visitors of the station.

The previous bus terminal with five ”bus bays” was considered a traffic hazard, as buses had to back up to exit. There are now two new pedestrian crossings and four new bus stops with better access to the station area, as well as two island shelters with ’kiss & ride’ parking for cars.

The project gives a boost to the station forecourt as a whole, providing space for safe passenger drop-off, passage and stay. To make the station more accessible, the conductor’s building between the station buildings has been demolished to create a new passageway for better access to and from the train platform. The new forecourt has been established with a new continuous pavement and also includes space for outdoor seating, increased bicycle parking, daily waste collection, a covered waiting area, trees and new lighting.
