Hackathon on storm surge protection, East Amager

Gottlieb Paludan Architects and DHI held a two-day hackathon aimed at developing integrated solutions to the challenges of rising sea levels and the increased frequency of extreme weather events.

GPA and DHI’s 48-hour hackathon was held on 25-26 October 2018, themed around the specific challenges of protecting the capital from storm surges with special focus on eastern Amager.

The City of Copenhagen and CPH City & Port Development provided a sounding board during the event at which cross-disciplinary teams of selected consultants and Copenhagen city officials were tasked with proposing multiple innovative solutions in a short, intensive process.

Handling both the increasing water flow and the rising number of Copenhageners in the future requires innovation by collaborating across professions and cultures.

The event consequently aimed to generate ideas for smart urban development in the future by creating integrated solutions to complex climate challenges through intensive, cross-disciplinary working methods.
