Grundtvigsvej School, Frederiksberg

Gottlieb Paludan Architects served as full-service consultant with responsibility for the architectural and landscaping project for the City of Frederiksberg in the conversion of Frøbel Teacher Training College to a new three-track elementary school with associated outdoor areas.

Frøbel Teacher Training College has moved address, leaving the City of Frederiksberg with the opportunity to design an entirely new school in the old factory buildings. Built in 1898, the existing buildings housed the Globus chocolate factory until 1976. The aggregate school project was divided into two stages: 1) Conversion and environmental rehabilitation of the existing buildings. 2) Extension, new outdoor areas and an optional parking structure.

Based on the school’s educational theory and practice, Gottlieb Paludan Architects created an architectural vision defining a living and experience-saturated environment with great spatial variation, respecting the nature and qualities of the existing buildings. Towards this end, a new, modern and functional extension was added, together with a multifunctional urban space combining road space and a schoolyard that challenges the senses.

Gottlieb Paludan Architects provided input in the form of visualisations and descriptions ensuring, in partnership with the municipality and the City Architect, that the outdoor areas accommodate the needs of students and local area residents alike.
