DSB Travel Shops

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has developed and designed the new Travel Shop concept for the Danish State Railway (DSB) stations in Esbjerg, Odense, Roskilde, Vejle, Ålborg,Fredericia, Aarhus and Copenhagen Central Station.

We have designed light, spacious and modern premises characterized by special custom-made fixtures and fittings, projected light and highly developed graphics, complete with self-service machines and staff to assist customers. This shop concept reflects current attitudes to the relationship between the travelling public and the transport company. Here, the option for customer self-service, with assistance as required, is facilitated in quite a different manner than ever before. It is a “counter-less encounter” in an inspirational environment, which is flexible enough to be easily adjusted as and when new types of payment and information gain ground.

In its physical appearance, the shop balances the commercial demands for exposure and efficiency with the overarching idea to exude calm, composure and quality. We developed the fixtures and fittings as well as the interior design in close cooperation with all stakeholders, and the concept has been approved by both end-users and DSB’s management. As part of the development process, we made a mock-up of the shop with all the technical installations, testing the ergonomics of the equipment and the many important security and cash-handling issues. Ensuring staff health and safety and customer accessibility are major priorities, as are the commercial opportunities for selling other travel products.

So far, the Travel Shop concept has been implemented at the stations in Esbjerg, Odense and Roskilde.
