International architectural award goes to Copenhagen’s new, sustainable CHP unit

19.10.2016

At a ceremony in London last weekend, Gottlieb Paludan Architects was honoured to receive LEAF’s (Leading European Architecture Forum) prestigious architectural award 2016 for BIO4, Copenhagen’s new biomass-fuelled CHP unit at the Amager Power Station.

The winning project, which includes a new CHP unit and a master plan for the future development of the Amager Power Station, won in its category against projects from South Africa, Afghanistan and the United States. The panel of judges included prominent individuals from the architecture and construction industry, among these partners and heads of design from Zaha Hadid Architects, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, AECOM and BDP.

BIO4 is expected to become a beacon for sustainable heat production and an excursion spot for tourists and Copenhageners alike. The project is an important part of Copenhagen’s ambition to become the world’s first CO2-neutral capital by 2025.

The architecture of the new CHP unit reflects the transition to sustainable energy, and visitors are invited to climb BIO4’s façade which is enveloped in tree trunks in order to gain an insight into the production processes.

BIO4 is developed in collaboration with Møller & Grønborg and Speirs + Major.
